After a lot of hype that the vape world was going to get rocked by this new technology, better tasting results and out of the ordinary space aged looking. The Ghost MV1 unit has finally released.
With all the pictures and video excerpts recently released, there was no doubt that the Ghost MV1 would look amazing. Like everyone else, I was very excited to get my new MV1 vaporizer. After many hours of thinking about what to choose, I finally decided on going with the Rose Gold model. With 4 beautiful finishes to choose from, it made the decision that much harder. After learning that the unit had been shipped, the eagerness with which I anticipated its arrival made it feel like I’d been waiting for months. In Canada, incoming parcels go through customs and they always get held up and delayed at the border. This process can sometimes take around 10 to 14 days before the parcel gets delivered to one’s doorstep!
As Ghost had advertised, they used advanced technology and engineering to build the MV1. The box appeared somewhat large but the details in the craftsmanship and presentation put into the box itself, impressed. This only heightened my eagerness to open it and get to the high-end vaporizer.
As you open the box, it’s all hinged and held close by a magnet to reveal the MV1 perfectly placed, surrounded by nice green colors and pictures.
By the way the rose gold finish is beautiful and will not disappoint, yes it’s a fingerprint magnet but it looks so F&%*ing sexy!
Inside the box:
You will find, at first glance, the MV1’s instruction manual; USB charging cable; accessories kit that includes cleaning wipes, picks, cotton buds (Q-tips), extra crucible and lid as well as one concentrate pad. At the same time, I also received one fast charger (sold separately), which makes charging the MV1 way faster and more effective. However, I’m not sure as to why Ghost did not include the fast charger as the price of the MV1 is already high enough. And since the fast charger is a must-have accessory, adding it’s price separately does add to the final cost for the consumer. Anyways, if you are looking to order the MV1, you most definitely want to add the fast charger before completing your order.
To digress a little, a great suggestion here for Ghost would be to offer an bundle package available at a discounted price…
Before Using the MV1 Tips:
Back to the MV1, after unboxing the unit, I highly recommend taking the battery and charging it overnight. This is to allow the perfect first initial charging sequence and help prolong the battery life. If you opt for and have the fast charger, you only have to charge it for a couple of hours! Yup, fast charging takes roughly 2.5 hours to reach full battery life while the provided USB cable can take 6 to 8 hours. Told you that you needed that fast charger!! Once the battery is fully charged, you’re ready to start using the MV1……stop right there! Before you load that first, long-awaited crucible; before you begin to enjoy the great tasting vapor, YOU MUST first of all take out the heat sink and assure it is properly assembled. Failure to do this will mean you might have issues with having an improperly sealed heat sink which in turn can mean inconsistent hits and poor performances. Please, ensure you do this if you want a perfect first impression of the MV1. When you first hit it and your eyes roll back in your head as the intense terps and flavor consume your soul and that half smirk as you exhale smooth thick vapor!
Assembling the heat sink is a pretty easy process: open the crucible holder door on the unit. Push up on the silicone gasket to release the heat sink from its tight fit and then pull it out. You will then pull the glass mouthpiece out and then proceed to taking the cap off the heat sink. It will then reveal a black rubber/silicone that can simply be pulled out, revealing a ceramic part. This is all the components of the heat sink; you will need to repeat this process for the cleaning/maintaining of the unit. Then reassemble it, making sure every piece is properly pushed in to ensure a tight seal. Once you’re done, just push back the heat sink in its place on the MV1 and you are now ready to load your first crucible.
LOADING THE CRUCIBLE:
You will want to grind your cannabis to a not-too-fine but not-too-coarse consistency as the grind will also help with its performance. This unit is an on demand convection so airflow is key to its performance. So please, do NOT overload or pack the crucible tight as this will not allow for an even extraction and will result in poor performance. Simply fill the crucible leaving it fluffy so that it allows no restriction to the heat to pass through it as it heats the flower in order to release the oils to produce the best vapor possible. That’s it, you’re now on your way to a great session.
HOW TO:
Now that the crucible is loaded and into the MV1, it’s now time to turn the unit on and select your desired temperature. To turn the unit on, you will need to hold down the single button interface until the green single led turns on and then release it. The unit will then indicate the battery level with 3 green led lights (3 indicates full charge; 2 halfway and 1 means a low battery so time to place on that optional fast charger). Next, click the button three times to put the unit in vaping mode. The next step is where I found using the MV1 a little bit confusing. Because it only has one button, you will need to do a long press, one-click once, two-click sequence, in order to choose the heat level for flower (yellow LED) or concentrates(red LED). But then again, you will be able to have two favorite heat settings saved in the red LED sequence. The one-button interface is not entirely bad but after a crucible or two, it does get confusing! To help with this small challenge, Ghost have released a mobile application that helps ease the confusion associated with using the single button.
But they have now finally released a cell app that does help with ease of the one button clicking challenge.
After you clicking 3 times to put the unit in vaping mode, you will need to hold the button down for a second or two which will reveal the battery level once again, then repeat the long press which then brings you to the heat level selection. Yellow single LED = herb low 338ºF; two yellow LEDs= herb medium heat 365ºF and three yellow LEDs = herb high-level 392ºF. Those are the preset temps for flower as you select by clicking that single button. Then it goes to red LED, and this reveals one red LED = herb customized heat setting; two red LEDs = your second customized heat setting and 3 red LEDs indicates concentrate mode which the heat level is preset to 428ºF. Now that you have selected the desired temp for dry herb or the single concentrate temp, you will proceed to hold down the vape button (located on the back of the unit). After a few seconds when the temp selected is reached, the unit will vibrate indicating it’s time to take that nice long draw. 10 to 15 seconds later, you will feel the unit vibrate again indicating the heating has now ended, and you are free to take in and exhale some crazy, smooth and tasty vapor!
CELL PHONE APP:
While you are waiting for the MV1 to charge take the time to download the Ghost App for your iPhone or Android. You will want this as it allows you to fine tune the 2 custom vape temps. Or easily select any of the 5 temps for flower (3 preset and 2 custom) and one concentrate temp. The app itself to me is a must have but it does leave you wondering why they have not perfected it. The App itself leaves so many opportunities for taking the MV1 to the next level. They are saying the app will have an update releasing more options and flex-ability. I would love to see a bump mode added to the app. It would allow the unit to ramp up the temp every time you activate the vape button by 10 degrees. Not having to go to the app or having to go true all the clicking sequences in order to bump up the temp. Imagine starting low and ending up at max temp to fully extract that crucible when vaping flower without. To me, that would make the MV1 experience even better!
It’s a very simple app that leaves so many open opportunities untouched.
Battery Performance :
The battery is great allowing for about 100 draws in my testing starting at the lowest temp and slowly bringing the temps up as the sessions goes. That works out to at least 4 crucibles before having to charge the battery. As the battery drains it does takes a bit longer for the unit to get to temp but most vaporizers on the market also does this.
OVERALL THOUGHTS:
My overall thoughts on the MV1 is that it is by far the best performing portable vaporizer in 2018.
The vapor produced by the MV1 is more flavorful then the Mighty, as the Mighty is has a lot of conduction. With the MV1 it is much more pronounced and can even be mouth-watering. Plus the smoothness of the vapor it produces is unsurpassed by any portable vaporizer I have tried yet.
Yes, there’s a lot of bashing about the humming when the unit heats up but personally, I hardly hear it (might be my 46 year old ears). The IQ also makes a far more noticeable noise when it heats but no one mentions it!
The heat sink has to be checked regularly to ensure a good seal. For me, it makes for a must clean ritual, ensuring a perfect session every time I use the MV1. It’s not too portable a unit as its weight and size will turn off many from carrying it in their pockets. But with a proper case, this unit could easily be thrown in a backpack. At the moment, not having a case makes it easy to scratch and you don’t want that to happen after pushing out $295 US dollars to get it . A case and the now available crucible holder would make for the perfect outdoor adventure vaporizer! The crucible holder allows you to have five filled ready-to-be-vaped bowls when on the go.
Also, don’t forget that if you pre-load the MV1 with a total of 6 crucibles, that and a spare battery will definitely get you through your weekend camping trip.
The well thought out ergonomics makes the unit feel great in the hand (yes I have big hands). So I feel the weight and the balance of the unit is comfortable in the hand as you use it, making for a great session.
So still holding back on the cost of this unit…..
I don’t blame you as the price is the only hold back of getting the MV1 in my opinion. But if they could bring out a bundle with MV1, the quick charger, extra battery and the crucible dispenser at $349.95. I believe that it would bring more value for one’s hard earned money and make the decision to buy easier for the reluctant consumer.
Last but not least, what I would love to see on the MV2 (if they release one) is an actual digital display with more than just a single button making for an easier interface with a more flexible degree by degree temperature adjustment along with the inclusion of the quick charger.
Thanks for stopping by and hope you enjoyed the read, if you have any questions or suggestions please leave them in the comments.
Vape On!
